9 flashcards — one A4 sheet, nine cards and three to write yourself

  1. Print on A4, portrait, 1 sheet.
  2. In the print dialog set scale to 100% — not “Fit to page”. Twelve cells fill an A4 exactly, so any shrinking makes them a size that is nearly right and isn’t.
  3. Turn Background graphics on. On three of these cards the amber is what tells the thing being named apart from the grey it sits in — in greyscale that difference goes away.
  4. Cut along the dashed lines. Card stock, or paper glued to card, if they are going to last.

One set, one stripe: all twelve are graphite, so they sort back together by edge without reading. Three chips inside it — Things (6) · Did (2) · Feeling (1). Same 70 × 74 mm as flashcards-02 through -06, so these shuffle into that pile; they are not the size of flashcards-01’s bigger cards.

The last three cards are blank on purpose. Nine words into twelve cells leaves three, so they are picture box, ruled line, write your own — the same cards that end the sheets on flashcards-02 and -05. Good for whatever comes home next week in the same lesson.

⚠ pointed and talked are the past, and no picture can show that. Both cards show the action happening; the -ed on the word is the whole lesson, and it is yours to teach rather than the card’s to carry. Deal them as a pair and say both out loud — pointed gains a syllable (POINT-id) while talked gains none (TALKT). That is the same ending said two different ways, and two regular verbs that disagree about it is probably why they are both on this list.

Two words have a second meaning she may reach for first. rubber is the thing that rubs out pencil — the picture is deliberately mid-rub, with the line stopping and the crumbs showing, because the word is also a material. tick is the mark you make on correct work, not the insect — the worksheet behind it is the only thing saying so, and there is a spider card on flashcards-05 in the same pile.

Pair page with the book card from flashcards-01. The book in the picture is grey and only the one page is coloured, exactly the way flashcards-03 draws a door on a house: the coloured part is the word. Hold the two cards together and the part-and-whole does the explaining. This banner does not print.
